There Is An Urgent Need To Obtain Donated Blood Of Recovered Coronavirus Patients

The Chicago Medical Society, along with our 17,000 Chicago-area affiliated physicians, and Metro Infectious Disease Consultants, the largest infectious disease group in the country, have undertaken historic efforts to respond to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic.

There is an urgent need to obtain donated blood of recovered Coronavirus patients in order to treat current Coronavirus patients and healthcare workers amidst this epidemic.

As you may know, plasma from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 can be a potentially rich source of antibodies. For severely ill Coronavirus-infected patients, providing them with these antibodies may help speed their recovery.

Recent reports show that asymptomatic patients infected with COVID-19 may transmit the virus for up to three days. Therefore, treatment of exposed populations with these antibodies can also help reduce potential transmission.
